Dream with Reed Bee on Hakea Plant
A new collection of watercolour and ink paintings on paper. This series is a celebration of the unique, native, endangered, and beautiful natural elements found here on our humble Tasmania Island.
These pieces focus on the little details we might often overlook, inviting us to take a closer look and perhaps appreciate them a little more.
Dream with Reed Bee on Hakea Plant: This artwork is to celebrate the petite non-honey producer, Reed Bee, hovering around on Hakea Plant.
Reed bees, belonging to the genus Exoneura, are a common type of native bee found in Tasmania. They are small, slender bees with shiny black bodies and a red-brown abdomen. Reed bees are known for nesting in hollow stems and pithy material, especially in plants like Lantana, blackberry, and raspberry. They play a crucial role in pollination, particularly for berry crops.
Hakea plants, particularly Hakea epiglottis (Beaked Hakea), are native to Tasmania. This shrub is common in peaty heaths across the island.
Hakea epiglottis (Beaked Hakea):
An endemic shrub, often growing to 3 meters tall, with rust-colored hairs on young leaves. It's easily distinguishable from similar species like Hakea megadenia.
Hakea lissosperma (Needle Bush):
A shrub or small tree found in various Tasmanian regions, including the Break O'Day, Central Highlands, and Derwent Valley.
Other Hakea species:
While Hakea epiglottis is the most common native Hakea in Tasmania, other species like Hakea laurina (Pincushion Hakea) are also found, often naturalized.
Distinguishing Features:
Hakea plants are known for their cylindrical leaves and woody follicles. The leaves of Hakea epiglottis are 1.5 to 7.5 cm long and 1 to 2 mm wide, with rust-colored hairs.
Ecological Role:
Hakea species can provide shelter and food for native birds and other wildlife.
Cultivation:
Some Hakea species are popular garden plants, like Hakea laurina, which can be grown for their attractive flowers and dense foliage.
Distribution:
Hakea lissosperma is found in various regions of Tasmania, including Break O'Day, Central Highlands, Circular Head, and the Derwent Valley
