Dream with Harpoon Weed: This weed looks beautiful, but it is a threat in our Tasmanian water.
Harpoon weed, scientifically known as Asparagopsis armata, is a non-native seaweed that poses a threat to Tasmania's marine ecosystems. It is a declared weed in Tasmania, meaning its importation, sale, and distribution are prohibited.
Distinctive Features:
Harpoon weed is easily identified by its distinctive harpoon-like barbs on its lower branches.
Impact:
This weed can outcompete native seagrasses and other marine plants, potentially disrupting the entire ecosystem.
Potential for Harm:
Its presence can negatively affect marine animals that rely on native seagrass beds for habitat and food.
Where to Find It:
Harpoon weed is often found in shallow subtidal waters, deep pools on the lower shore, and on various substrates including rocks.
Importance of Reporting:
If you think you've seen this weed in Tasmania, it's important to report it to Biosecurity Tasmania to help prevent its spread
