Dragon Robe | 龍吟现聲威
Material: Acrylic on canvas, framed with stained pine floating frame
Size: 43cm x 32.5cm x 4cm
This piece is deeply influenced by the magnificent dragon robes worn by the emperors during the Qing Dynasty.
Specifically, the composition features a golden dragon emerging from the top of the artwork, positioned above a field of multicolored clouds. This arrangement is a direct reference to the dragon robes, where such placement symbolised the emperor's supreme status, elevating him above all others. Similarly, the inclusion of multicolored cloud motifs at the bottom of the artwork echoes their presence at the base of these imperial garments. The depiction of the five-clawed dragon holding a pearl further emphasizes the emperor's exclusive power and his perceived ability to determine the fate of his people. Typically, you'll find an energetic dragon motif prominently featured in the center of a dragon robe, specifically around the chest area.
Finally, the dominant use of canary yellow in the artwork is intentional, as this color was strictly reserved for the emperor's attire during that era.
