AS You Wish | 如 意 獻 吉 祥
Material: The last of paper from the historical Burnie Papermill in Tasmania, acrylic paint., high gloss sealant.
Stones: Natural Pink Rhodonite from Western Australia; Green Agate from Tasmania; Green Moss Agate from New South Wales. All stones acquired from Tasmanian stone collector, Graham Williams.
“As You Wish” is a direct interpretation of the Chinese kanji "如意" (ru yi') and is deeply inspired by the rich history and symbolism of the traditional Chinese "如意" scepter. Historically, "如意" scepters were highly valued objects, often crafted as special gifts intended for the imperial court and members of the aristocracy. These scepters carried a profound meaning, representing the heartfelt wish that the recipient's desires and aspirations would be fulfilled – "may your wishes come true." Traditionally, these symbolic objects were fashioned from a variety of precious materials, including jade, precious metals, wood, porcelain, and marble. Imperial versions were particularly elaborate, frequently incorporating delicate inlays of pearl and being meticulously created from the finest grades of jade and gold.
In contrast to these traditional forms, my sculpture offers a contemporary reimagining of the "如意." It is uniquely constructed entirely from paper, sourced from a papermill with a long and significant history. Furthermore, I have incorporated a vibrant gradient to give the piece a distinctly modern aesthetic.
In addition, I have carefully selected three stones to integrate into the sculpture, each chosen for its unique properties. The Pink Rhodonite is included for its believed ability to aid in emotional healing, dispel negativity and past traumas, and balance the heart and root chakras, promoting overall balance and well-being. Similarly, the Green Agate is incorporated not only for its resemblance to the Pink Rhodonite's healing properties but also for its association with good luck, renewal, and growth.
This sculpture, "As You Wish," is intended to be more than just a visually interesting object. It is designed to serve as a unique and meaningful gift, carrying with it the enduring symbolism of luck and prosperity.
